Choosing a surface

Pavers or poured concrete?

Both are built on a compacted base. They differ in how they look, how they move and how they are repaired. Here is the short version.

Pavers

Poured concrete

What it is
Pavers: Individual units laid in a pattern on a bedding layer, held in by an edge restraint.
Poured concrete: One continuous slab, poured into forms and finished in place.
The look
Pavers: Patterns, borders and color blends. The joints are part of the design.
Poured concrete: A clean, unbroken surface. Broom finish for grip, or a smoother trowel finish.
Joints
Pavers: Sand-filled joints between every unit let the surface flex with the ground.
Poured concrete: Control joints are cut or tooled in to guide where the slab cracks.
Repairs
Pavers: A section can be lifted and the same pavers set back in place.
Poured concrete: Damage is patched, or the section is cut out and poured again.
Works well for
Pavers: Patios, walkways, entries, pool decks and driveways with a pattern.
Poured concrete: Driveways, walkways, patios and slabs with a simple, clean finish.

Still torn? Ask for both in your estimate and compare them side by side.

Below the surface

The part you never see.

CD Pavers & Concrete is a new, CSLB-licensed contractor based in Escondido, CA. We install pavers and build concrete surfaces: driveways, flatwork, pavements and hardscape.

A patio or driveway is only as good as what sits under it. Before a single paver is laid or a yard of concrete is poured, the ground has to be dug out, graded for drainage and built back up with a compacted base.

  1. 01Subgrade

The ground is dug out, graded so water runs away from the house, and compacted.

  2. 02Compacted base

Crushed rock, spread and compacted. The base is what carries the weight.

  3. 03Pavers

Set on a thin bedding layer, held in by edge restraint, joints filled with sand.

  4. 03Poured slab

Placed in forms and finished, with control joints to guide where it cracks.

Before you sign

Ask for these in any estimate.

A written estimate should say exactly what is being built and how. Whoever you hire, look for these.
